Attribution

The map has been created using solely Open Data, which is defined as non-commercial data that is made freely available and easily accessible online for reuse and distribution.

The data used fall into two categories.

1. Irish public sector data

The Irish Open Data portal at data.gov.ie provides access to datasets compiled and published by Government Departments and Public Bodies and made available for use and distribution under the EU Inspire Directive.

We have used public sector data to define the boundaries and geographical features of the area, and to provide context in the form of cultural and natural heritage data.

2: Open Street Maps data:

The OpenStreetMap Project is a worldwide initiative to create and distribute free geospatial data for anyone to use and share. Supported by a non-profit organisation, the project benefits from the local knowledge and wide range of expertise of over two million volunteers. A diverse community of mappers uses a range of data collection methods to ensure maps are constantly maintained and updated.

We have used Open Street Maps data to provide additional topographical detail at a local level.

Music Recordings

Access to their music catalogue was provided by RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. A new dataset was created by geolocating recordings according to associations with the song titles, singers or composers.

Community-generated data

Data was collected by Ríonach Ní Néill from members of the community, and original audio recordings, text descriptions and images were generated. Data categories include local history, folklore, placenames and their meanings, places of interest, local people of interest, music, poetry and literature of/about local places, views and walks. Informant names were recorded for each piece of data. New datasets were created by geolocating the recordings, texts and images.

Local Forms of Placenames

Local forms of placenames and their meanings were collected from members of the community. These are Irish language placenames in common use in the community currently or in recent memory. In many cases there are no official names recorded for these placenames.
Eileen Nic Dhonncha contributed the local forms of placenames and their meanings for an Cheathrú Rua. She collected the data between 1988 and 2020 through oral interviews with local residents, primarily Seán Ó Loideáin (Johnny Mhicil Searlaí),  Micheál (Micil) Ó Loideáin, Piaras Ó Conaire and Sonny Mac Donncha.  Data was documented in Nic Donncha, E., (1989), Logainmneacha agus Patrún Lonnaíochta ar an gCeathrú Rua, Unpublished BA dissertation,  NUI Galway.

Trails

Siúlóidí na Ceathrún Rua/Carraroe Trails were established by Comharchumann Mhic Dara and an Cheathrú Rua Tidy Towns Committee. Map trails are published at https://www.sportireland.ie/outdoors/walking/trails?county=45 and the trails were digitised from this source.
